Juana Molina - Un dia | 2008

Juana Molina is a singer/songwriter and actress from Argentina. After several sitcom roles, she released her first album Rara, in 1996. Since, she has had critical success with a further four more albums. Un día, her latest release is a fine example of folktronica that has the edge of the acid inspired movement of the late 60s with the modern sound of electro music.

The album kicks of with the brain frying self-titled track that either puts you off or leaves you craving for more. The other songs on the album are not all as direct as "Un día" but they form a splendid mix of tempos and styles that allow the release to evolve without being repetitive. From the downtempo dreamy shoegaze edge of "Vive solo" to the trip-hop sounds of "Lo dejamos" or the freak folk feel of "No llama", Un día has a lot to offer.

Albeit, Un día is not an album for everyone and it is one of those releases you need to be in the right mood and mindset to appreciate fully. However, it does deserve your attention and even if you only listen to it once, it would be a shame to let it slip you by. As of yet, it has been four years since the release of Un día and one can only hope the 50 year old Argentinian has more to offer.
